An early flowering Candelabra Primula that produces tiered whorls of deep crimson-red, bell-shaped flowers spaced at intervals on leafless stems that rise above the foliage. One of the easiest of the tall primulas to grow. Height in bloom is 2-3’. Does best in part shade in rich, consistently moist soils. It may be grown in full sun in areas with cool summers if the soil is kept moist. Full shade is tolerated, but it doesn’t do as well. Attractive to butterflies. Deer and rabbit resistant. Perennial in USDA Hardiness Zones 4-8.Seed sowing instructions: This method attempts germination in warm temps, but may need to be cold stratified if no germination, so start at least 10 weeks before last frost date. Sow seed in pots or flats of moistened seed starting mix and cover seed thinly with fine grit or a little dry seed-starting mix and spritz with water to moisten. Cover and keep in warm temperatures. If seed does not germinate within 1-2 weeks, place the covered pot or tray into a cold area such as a refrigerator or cold garage for four weeks. Bring back into warm temperatures, provide light and watch for germination. Plant out after all danger of frost. We only ship to the 50 states in the U.S.A. If ordered outside the United States the order will be canceled.
